The new car was totaled in 24 hours.
Call it a stroke of bad luck or sheer recklessness, a man from South Wales totaled his new car just one day after winning it in a lottery.
Adam Griffiths was the lucky winner of a brilliant 2006 Palma Red Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX FQ-320 in a drawing done by Dream Car Giveaways on April 26, 2021, but his luck didn't last long. After crashing and irreparably damaging him, the prize that he briefly possessed no longer exists.
"Andy Griffiths went straight to pick up this awesome Evo IX today that he won in last night's drawing," Dream Car Giveaways announced on social media. "A beautiful example of this way, of which I am sure he will get many happy miles!"
Unfortunately, the car didn't get many "happy miles" before being totaled.
The accident occurred at Pontypridd in South Wales and the driver and passenger suffered minor injuries. The driver allegedly lost control of the car, which resulted in the accident.
The photos show the front of the car completely destroyed, the bumper demolished and the hood raised. The engine and suspension components were reportedly severely damaged.
Griffiths received many scathing criticisms on social media after writing about the accident and posting pictures of the aftermath on Facebook. He quickly removed the post when he attracted more negative attention than he anticipated.
At the time he received his award, the sports sedan had 70,000 miles on its full and record-breaking service history, with a 6-speed manual transmission and a black Alcantara leather interior. The soaring price of the car in Japan reflects how popular it is in the country, where it is considered one of the best performing vehicles.
Dream Car Giveaways described the car as "being presented in really impressive condition, benefiting from some very minor modifications while still running on standard power, which means excellent drivability."
While Griffith's post is no longer public, users migrated to Dream Car Giveaways' social media platforms to express thoughts of him, with some wishing the unfortunate winner well and others ridiculing his neglect. Some users even compared him to infamous lottery winner Michael Carroll, who squandered part of his £ 9.7 million (US $ 14.5 million) prize with demolition derbies at his home.
"To the guy who won the Evo IX ... if you are reading this partner, I really hope you are well and have a speedy recovery!" wrote a commenter. "I hope you're okay. We all have a heavy foot sometimes, don't we? However, it happened, at least you're still alive."
